Vauxhall Bridge Introduces Vehicle Weight Limit
TfL said the limit is a precaution after an inspection found structural deterioration, with 0.5% of vehicles affected and lorries diverted.
On July 1, 2026, Transport for London will implement an 18-tonne weight restriction on Vauxhall Bridge, banning heavy commercial vehicles to protect the structure's safety.
A recent inspection revealed that "some elements of the structure have deteriorated," prompting Carl Eddleston, TfL's director of streets and network operations, to confirm protecting the bridge remains the agency's priority.
Buses and emergency vehicles are exempt from the new ban, which affects approximately 200 vehicles daily, or 0.5% of the 39,500 total crossings, ensuring typical commuter routes function without disruption.
Vauxhall joins Hammersmith Bridge and Albert Bridge, which have faced similar weight limits or closures due to structural issues in recent years, reflecting broader challenges regarding London's ageing infrastructure.
TfL officials will continue to monitor Vauxhall Bridge closely and keep the public updated as work progresses, with the temporary measure designed to prevent further damage until permanent solutions are implemented.
