There was a circle in Maria Burns' yard where grass wouldn't grow and trees died. She knew what it was: An old natural gas well, plugged when she was a little girl, starting to leak again.
According to various estimates, there are as many as 2–4 million abandoned oil and gas wells in the United States. They were drilled for oil and gas in ancient times and then disappeared without a trace when production ran out. Today, efforts are being made to find them in order to prevent greater environmental damage.
