US Begins Transfer of up to 7,000 IS Group Detainees From Syria to Iraq

About 150 detainees have been moved so far in a US-led effort to transfer up to 7,000 Islamic State prisoners to Iraqi facilities to prevent security risks.

  • On Wednesday, U.S. Central Command said it began transferring Islamic State detainees from northeastern Syria to secure facilities in Iraq, and `Ultimately, up to 7,000 Isis detainees could be transferred from Syria to Iraqi-controlled facilities,` CENTCOM said.
  • Following a prison breakout in Shaddadeh, Syrian government forces took control of camps from the Syrian Democratic Forces amid a ceasefire and SDF withdrawal.
  • The first transfer involved 150 detainees from Hassakeh province, the Iraqi army confirmed their arrival and said they include first-tier leaders and foreign nationals, including around 240 Tunisians.
  • On Thursday, Iraq announced legal proceedings for IS detainees, with Admiral Brad Cooper stating, `Facilitating the orderly and secure transfer is critical to preventing a threat.`
  • The al-Hol camp still hosts some 24,000 people, mostly women and children, and Tom Barrack, U.S. envoy to Syria, said the Syrian Democratic Forces’ role `has largely expired` as the United States facilitates security transitions.
