The Turner Files: Smith told us who she governs for
Justice Minister Mickey Amery says the bill would bar DEI hiring and mandatory training across public institutions, with rules potentially extended to grant-funded nonprofits.
On Tuesday, Alberta Justice Minister Mickey Amery tabled Bill 33, the Justice Statutes Amendment Act, which has passed first reading and aims to prohibit DEI-based hiring and mandatory training across provincial public services.
The legislation would ban DEI programs across Alberta Public Service, Crown corporations, universities, and municipalities including Calgary and Edmonton, while requiring all mandatory workplace training to be ideologically neutral.
Sandra Azocar, president of the Alberta Union representing nearly 100,000 public-sector workers, claimed Danielle Smith is attempting to appease "extreme factions" within her party over DEI concerns.
Research from Diversity Matters examining 366 public companies found those in the top quartile for gender diversity were 15 per cent more likely to have financial returns above national industry medians.
In 2024, the government passed three laws targeting transgender Albertans, restricting gender-affirming care and sports participation. Smith later used the notwithstanding clause to shield these measures, which included removing more than 200 books from schools.
