'Spurs Nuns' Aiming to Bring Divine Intervention to the NBA Finals
The longtime San Antonio sisters prayed with Victor Wembanyama before Game 1 as their support for the Spurs continues to draw attention and donations.
Before Game 1 of the NBA Finals, San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama stepped off the court to join a group of nuns in a quick prayer, continuing the tradition of the Spurs Nuns who wear jerseys over their habits.
Decades ago, the sisters began writing letters to Coach Gregg Popovich after watching him lose his temper on television, a relationship his late wife Erin supported until her death in 2018.
The Salesian Sisters use their affinity for the Spurs to reach young people served by their mission. Bernadette Mota, director of mission advancement, said, 'And in order to reach the young where they're at, you have to love what they love.'
Wembanyama envisioned the Jackals this season to simulate European soccer match environments with organized chants and drumming. 'I've known for years that the Spurs community had this strength in them,' Wembanyama said.
Pope Leo XIV's prayer intention for June focuses on the value of sports in promoting peace globally. The nuns' presence at games has inspired supporters to donate, with Mota saying, 'All of this is divine providence, God's gift, because we're actually very much in need.
