‘At least 39 dead’ after two high-speed trains collide in Spain: Report
On Wednesday, a high-speed collision between a Renfe AVE train and an Iryo service near Urda, Toledo, killed at least 46 people and left 179 injured, with emergency crews searching the wreckage.
Preliminary findings indicate the Renfe train struck the rear of the stationary Iryo service; Cadena SER reported the Renfe train continued despite a red signal, though investigators have not determined the cause.
Emergency teams including Civil Protection worked at the scene where two carriages derailed down an embankment, while authorities established a support center at Madrid's Atocha station for relatives.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed he was "deeply saddened" by the disaster, leading the government to cancel its Wednesday schedule as major political parties suspended campaign activities.
The tragedy mirrors a January 18 collision near Adamuz that killed 46 people, renewing scrutiny of Spain's high-speed rail network, which extends more than 1,900 miles.
The accident has closed the rail line connecting Madrid and the southern region of Andalusia. A high-speed train collided with the rear of another train.
