The South was the only region where child population grew
The South was the only region to gain children, while the national median age rose to 39.4 years, Census Bureau estimates show.
New estimates from the Census Bureau released last week show the population of children declined in every region except the South, marking a clear demographic divide.
As of July 1, 2025, the median age rose to 39.4 years old, increasing from 39.2 the prior year and continuing an upward trend since at least 2020.
The South was the only region where the 45 to 64 age group population increased, though it was very small; more than two-thirds of metro areas experienced rising median ages from 2020 to 2025.
In Texas, counties on the outskirts of Dallas and Houston saw the largest increases in the population under 18, while Loving County experienced one of the largest declines in that age group.
Just 251 out of the 927 metro and micro areas saw a decline in median age, according to Census Bureau estimates covering demographics from 2020 to July 1, 2025.
