Man Tossed by Yellowstone Bison Says Hitting the Ground Was the Worst Part
The 65-year-old suffered a broken femur and is recovering after the park’s second documented bison attack this year, officials said.
- On July 10, Carl Isom-McDaniel was attacked by a bull bison at Yellowstone National Park's Bridge Bay Campground. The 65 year-old was thrown 8 feet into the air, suffering a broken femur in the park's second bison attack this year.
- Isom-McDaniel and his grandson were walking when the bison, initially appearing calm, suddenly charged. "He wasn't showing aggression or anything like that until it picked a target. That target happened to be me," Isom-McDaniel said.
- Witnessing the attack from at least 100 yards away, photographer Mike MacLeod filmed the encounter before charging the bison to distract it. The animal also targeted a group of children who managed to flee to safety.
- Following surgery at Bozeman Health, Isom-McDaniel is recovering from a "pretty painful injury." Yellowstone National Park officials confirmed no "management action" will be taken against the bison.
- The National Park Service warns that bison are "wild animals and are unpredictable," recommending a distance of 100 feet. Visitors accept inherent risks when entering the national park.
