Former mayor shot dead in central Colombia during election campaign
Authorities said the killings could undermine political participation as Colombia heads toward May 31 presidential elections.
- On Saturday, gunmen killed Rogers Devia, a former mayor of Cubarral and campaign coordinator for presidential candidate Abelardo de La Espriella, in a rural area of the city.
- Devia's killing and that of his staffer Eder Cardona occurred amid ongoing conflict in Meta, a region disputed by the FARC, the National Liberation Army, and the Clan del Golfo.
- Interior Minister Armando Benedetti stated investigators do not know why Devia was attacked, while police recently stopped an attack against a staffer for presidential candidate Paloma Valencia in Cubarral.
- The Public Defender said the killings could hurt "the exercise of political rights and democratic participation" ahead of Colombia's presidential elections, which take place on May 31.
- At least half a dozen candidates are competing in the election, where a run-off will occur in June if no candidate secures 50% of the vote.
