The lack of consent to facilitate divorce does not mean taking away anyone's freedom, Łukasz Warzecha points out, referring to the president's veto.
President Karol Nawrocki announced that he had vetoed the amendment to the Electoral Code, as well as the amendment to the Family and Guardianship Code, which would allow for extrajudicial divorces. "This is socially harmful, especially today, when Poland is facing a dramatic demographic crisis," the head of state argued in a Facebook video.
Karol Nawrocki signed three more bills and vetoed two, according to the President's office. Among the bills that failed to gain the President's approval were an amendment to the Family and Guardianship Code, which aimed to introduce the possibility of extrajudicial dissolution of marriage into Polish law, and an amendment to the Electoral Code, introducing, among other things, the institution of secretaries of district electoral commissions.
The president vetoed the law on extrajudicial divorces. The bill stipulated that if a couple, among other things, had no adult children, they could obtain a divorce at the registry office. "The state should support the stability of families and the decision to have children, not create regulations that discourage parenthood," said Karol Nawrocki. The second bill vetoed was an amendment to the Electoral Code.
On the last day of April, President Karol Nawrocki signed three legislative amendments. He vetoed two: an amendment to the Electoral Code and an amendment to the Family and Guardianship Code.
