The Onion's New Parody of Alex Jones' Infowars Starts with $100,000 to Sandy Hook Families
The satirical site will send $100,000 from early merchandise sales to Sandy Hook families as it turns the conspiracy brand into a comedy platform.
On Thursday, The Onion launches its satirical version of InfoWars on YouTube, though a Texas appeals court order has temporarily paused the company's ability to operate the brand.
Following founder Alex Jones' $1.4 billion defamation judgment for falsely calling the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting a hoax, families sought justice through acquiring the platform.
Onion CEO Ben Collins said the platform will sell items including a fake "pro oxygen" supplement pill, with the company initially sending $100,000 from merchandise sales to Sandy Hook families.
InfoWars creative director Heidecker told Variety that despite the court pause, their project is "happening," sending a defiant message to Texas courts about moving forward regardless.
Attorney Chris Mattei noted families are pleased with the social good achieved, as The Onion plans to continue pursuing Jones' property to ensure he never profits from future ventures.
