The South Iceland police requested assistance from rescue teams and the Coast Guard regarding the missing hikers. Their traveling companion contacted the police after the hikers failed to return. It turned out that they had made it to Reykjavík without notifying anyone.
Rescue teams from Árborg and Reykjavík were called out along with a Coast Guard helicopter in search of two hikers on Hellisheiði. The hikers were with a third man who was waiting in the car for their companions, but when they had not returned after a good while, the man who was waiting called 112 and requested assistance.
