Google Brings Nano Banana 2 to Google Earth
ZDNet’s early tests found the feature can create era-specific scenes and infographics, but the results may be inaccurate or include garbled text.
- Google announced today that Nano Banana 2 generative AI is now integrated directly into Google Earth on the web, rolling out globally and enabling users to generate historical visualizations, infographics, and architectural renderings using text prompts.
- Nano Banana has proven popular across Google products, having been integrated with Chrome, Photos, Search, Gemini Notebook, and Google Messages. Google Earth, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, added Street View time-travel capabilities.
- Google says teachers can prompt the tool to create a "hyper-realistic view" of Pompeii in 78 AD, with the algorithm set to "instantly transform" modern ruins into a "bustling, colorful street scene from the Roman Empire." The company also demonstrates reimagining empty Tokyo lots as shopping districts and generating infographics for landmarks like the Statue of Liberty.
- The feature launches only on Google Earth's web platform, excluding the mobile app with over 500 million downloads on the Play Store. ZDNet testing found generated infographics altered location layouts and contained garbled text, making direct Gemini use easier.
- Users face daily generation limits, with each image requiring up to two minutes to render; Google AI subscribers should note these limits operate independently from standard Google One plans. Nano Banana outputs are AI-generated interpretations that may not always be factually accurate.
