VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Canada advanced to its first-ever knockout round but also made history in a different way by becoming the first World Cup host to have to play outside of its borders.
Fans frustrated Canada being forced to play next World Cup match in United States
Following Canada’s 2-1 defeat to Switzerland on Wednesday, the team’s World Cup journey will now shift away from home soil and down to California for a Round of 32 match against South Africa.
Despite the entry into the K.-o. round, World Cup host Canada no longer contests games in its own country and now has to move to the neighboring country USA.
Defeated by Switzerland (1-2) in the last group game on Wednesday night, Canada missed the opportunity to play the game in the 16th final home in Vancouver, and will have to travel to Los Angeles on Sunday (22:00).
