[Nago] Along Prefectural Route 18 in Higashie, Nago City, the zelkova (Salicaceae, formerly the family Celastraceae) is bearing clusters of fruit. They hang down like clusters of grapes, delighting the eyes of drivers. The fruit is spherical and about 1 cm long. Numerous clusters of fruit grow, each about 10 to 20 cm long. Zelkova is dioecious. When ripe, the fruit turns red and is eaten by wild birds.
