The Health Exam Many Don’t Know They Need
A poll found only about one-third of adults know many vision-threatening eye diseases start without symptoms.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that all healthy adults get a medical eye exam at least once in their 30s, as many vision-threatening eye diseases begin without noticeable symptoms.
Most Americans wait until they notice changes in their vision before scheduling an appointment, leaving many people with eye disease unaware of their condition due to widespread lack of awareness.
Blood vessels at the back of the eye can reveal early signs of diabetes, stroke, and heart disease, making comprehensive exams a diagnostic tool for systemic health conditions beyond vision problems.
Ophthalmologist Dr. Laura Fine said regular eye exams throughout adulthood are important to catch diseases early, before symptoms appear, noting that for some conditions, once vision is lost, it cannot be restored.
Adults with family history of eye disease or conditions like diabetes may need more frequent exams, while EyeCare America may help uninsured or underinsured individuals access professional screenings.
