- On Tuesday, the European Parliament approved a sweeping overhaul of European Union air passenger rights by a vote of 546 to 12, introducing stronger consumer protections and limiting certain airline fees.
- The new rules replace passenger rights in place since 2004, concluding a process that faced more than 13 years of deadlock before establishing clearer standards.
- Airlines must now seat children under 14 next to adults at no extra cost, guarantee free carriage of one personal item, and provide bathroom access during tarmac delays of 30 minutes.
- Compensation rights of €250, €400, or €600 remain for passengers based on flight distance, while airlines must display all-inclusive fares from booking start and provide claim guidance within four days.
- Following parliamentary approval, the Council must formally ratify the agreement by early August 2026, with full regulations coming into force across member states starting in the second half of 2027.
