‘Damned Rope’: Heartbroken Mum of Dead Bungee Jumper Speaks
Investigators say the 21-year-old fell about 40 metres after the main safety rope was left unattached, and three men were arrested.
On Saturday, 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas died after falling approximately 40 metres from the Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, Brazil during a rope-jumping excursion. Police are investigating claims that operators failed to attach her safety rope before the jump.
Brazil's Civil Police are examining evidence that instructors skipped standard safety checks before the jump. Footage reportedly captured a bystander shouting "Guys, the rope!" as the main safety line remained coiled on the platform.
Police arrested three men aged 27, 32, and 42 at the scene following the incident. While initial reports suggested Freitas died instantly, off-duty nurse Rayza Dias told media the Jandira graduate was conscious when rescuers arrived.
Delegate Andrea Dantas Levy is leading the criminal investigation, which includes potential homicide charges against the three arrested men. Levy is also questioning whether the rope-jumping operation was properly authorized.
Hours before the tragedy, Freitas posted on Instagram: "Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge???" The light-hearted message has since been widely shared across Brazil following her death.
