The Democratic Republic of Congo to create the Earth’s largest protected tropical forest reserve

A new model of green economic development, conservation and peacebuilding in eastern DRC is protecting the forest while sustainably harnessing natural resources to benefit local communities.

The Democratic Republic of Congo wants to create what it says is the largest tropical forest reserve in the world. President Tshisekedi announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos that around 108,000 square kilometers of intact rainforest should be preserved.

The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Felix Tshisekedi, has announced the launch of a project to create the world’s largest protected tropical forest reserve. The project, called the “Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor” or “Congo River Reserve,” aims to preserve the Congo Basin, the world’s largest tropical carbon sink, while supporting sustainable and inclusive development.
