Thanksgiving Dinner Costs Down for Third Year: Survey
The average cost of a Thanksgiving dinner for 10 dropped 5% to $55.18, driven by a 16% fall in turkey prices despite increases in some produce, the American Farm Bureau said.
- On Nov. 19, the American Farm Bureau Federation said the classic Thanksgiving dinner for 10 costs $55.18, about $5.52 per person, down 5% from last year and marking three years of decline.
- A fall in turkey prices helped, as a 16-pound turkey averages $21.50 and retail prices are down more than 16% from last year despite wholesale fresh turkey costs rising.
- The survey found that adding boneless ham, russet potatoes, and green beans increased the expanded menu by $21.91 to $77.09, with a veggie tray up 61.3% and sweet potatoes up 37%.
- Farmers warned that U.S. farmers and ranchers face economic pressure, with about 16 cents on the dollar, as Bennett said, `We don't want to see any more farms go out of business`.
- The Farm Bureau recommends waiting till Monday–Wednesday before Thanksgiving, based on volunteer shoppers checking prices in the first week of November using store apps and websites, and Pierce Bennett explained, `'Turkey is a staple on the Thanksgiving table.
