The Cactus Bowl Is Back, Returning to Arizona State’s Campus in December
Fiesta Sports Foundation says the game will return to its original name and draw Big Ten and Big 12 teams in a prime-time matchup.
On Wednesday, June 3, the Fiesta Sports Foundation announced the Rate Bowl will rebrand as the Cactus Bowl and move from Chase Field to Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.
This decision ends a nine-year run at Chase Field, returning the game to Mountain America Stadium where it played from 2006-2015. The bowl originated as the Copper Bowl in Tucson in 1989.
The Cactus Bowl is scheduled for Saturday, December 26, featuring a Big Ten and Big 12 matchup broadcast on ABC. The 2011 game drew over 54,000 fans in Tempe.
Tempe Mayor Corey Woods said the move will boost tourism and bring positive exposure to the city. Fiesta Sports Foundation Executive Director and CEO Erik Moses added the rebranding gives the game a 'true identity.'
ASU athletic director Graham Rossini welcomed the return, citing growth of the Tempe campus. However, Arizona State, Arizona, and legacy Pac-12 schools remain ineligible for participation until 2027-28 due to conference realignment.
