Saturday Citations: Wages vs. Welfare; Origins of Teeth; a Search for Primordial Black Holes
- A U.S.-based team led by Sihao Cheng announced on May 21 the discovery of 2017 OF201, a new dwarf planet candidate in the outer solar system.
- The team found 2017 OF201 while searching for the elusive Planet Nine, a hypothesized large planet influencing icy objects beyond Neptune.
- 2017 OF201 measures about 700 kilometers in diameter, making it roughly one-third the size of Pluto, and follows a highly stretched orbit that takes approximately 25,000 years to complete a journey deep into the Oort cloud.
- Cheng explained that the object travels so far into space that it may have encountered stars beyond our own Sun in its history, and he also mentioned its dim appearance and atypical orbit.
- The discovery challenges the Planet Nine theory by showing 2017 OF201 does not share the clustered orbits expected, but more data and upcoming observatories may clarify this.

A new study of the Gobi Wall in the Gobi highland desert of Mongolia reveals a multifunctional role beyond defense; data from the James Webb Space Telescope is bringing physicists closer to resolving the Hubble tension; and a U.S.-based team of astronomers stumbled on a new dwarf planet in the outer solar system while searching for Planet Nine.
Twist in search for mysterious ‘Planet Nine’ in the dark depths of our solar system
Planet Nine, also called Planet X, has never been caught on a telescope (Picture: Getty Images/Science Photo Libra) Scientists hunting for Planet Nine, an elusive planetary body that could change our understanding of the solar system, have found something. Planet X is a hypothetical planet seven times the mass of Earth tucked just behind Pluto. Despite possibly being the fifth most massive planet, scientists have never tracked the white whale of…
