The eastern rock lobster can be found along the continental shelf off Australia's south-eastern coast. The world's largest spiny lobster, it grows to more than 8 kilograms and can live for over 20 years. Norm Patten's mum was a Monaro-Gunai woman and he grew up in Victoria's East Gippsland region. Ron Mason was raised in a bark hut beside the river in Nerrigundah, west of Bodalla. Mr Mason was one of a small number of Aboriginal fishers on the far south coast who bought commercial fishing licences.
