Texas Republicans formed the caucus to counter Sharia law's rise, linking some Islamic groups to terrorism and proposing measures affecting tax-exempt statuses and immigration.
- On Thursday, Chip Roy and Keith Self launched the Sharia-Free America Caucus in the U.S. House, continuing a Texas-led push opposing Sharia law.
- Last month, Gov. Greg Abbott issued three directives targeting Islamic groups, including designating the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR as foreign terrorist organizations, and ordered probes into an Islamic tribunal in north Texas.
- The Preserving a Sharia‑Free America Act, filed in October, would support a two-page bill directing the U.S. attorney general, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of State to bar foreign nationals who observe Sharia.
- CAIR and the Muslim Legal Fund of America sued Abbott, arguing his directives are unconstitutional, while under federal law an FTO designation suspends tax-exempt status and John Cornyn, U.S. Senator , introduced legislation to let the Treasury Department terminate such status.
