Texas A&M issues cease and desist order to school for trademark infringement

The system said TexAM’s use of similar names and marks could confuse students as state regulators also ordered the school to stop operating.

  • On Friday, the University System issued a cease-and-desist to the Texas American Muslim Institute, also known as TexAM, demanding it stop using branding that infringes on its trademarks.
  • Simultaneously, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board ordered the institution to halt all operations, citing its failure to obtain a required Certificate of Authority to grant degrees in Texas.
  • According to the System, "Use of 'TexAM,' 'Texas AM University' and similar variations creates confusion and misleads the public," and the entity is not affiliated with the University.
  • TexAM claimed it is "a legal entity in Texas and are actively engaging with THECB to clarify any misunderstandings and to ensure full compliance with State regulations."
  • Governor Greg Abbott directed the enforcement action against the Richardson-based institution, which offers STEM courses without state approval, warning of potential criminal and civil penalties.
