Tesla to add Cybertruck shift to clear orders before dismantling line next year
Tesla will add an extra shift to finish outstanding Cybertruck orders as it prepares to expand Cybercab production, Musk said.
On Saturday, CEO Elon Musk announced Tesla will add an extra production shift to fulfill outstanding Cybertruck orders before dismantling the assembly line at Gigafactory Texas next year for Cybercab expansion.
Sales of the electric pickup fell to 20,237 vehicles last year, a 48 percent decline from 2024, far below Musk's initial projection of 250,000 annual sales.
Since its late 2023 launch, the Cybertruck has faced manufacturing challenges including 11 recalls reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with one 2025 recall affecting more than 46,000 units.
Resources are being redirected toward the Cybercab, a two-seat robotaxi central to Tesla's autonomous-vehicle strategy, with approximately 570 units operating among more than 1,200 robotaxis in Texas according to Texas DMV figures.
Production at the Texas facility will wind down around June or July next year, while Tesla vice president of vehicle engineering Lars Moravy intends to begin selling Cybercabs to customers by year-end 2026.
