Hundreds of Thousands of Tesco Workers Set for Pay Rise
Tesco invests £200 million to raise pay above the new legal minimum and introduces a domestic abuse policy with up to three days paid leave for affected staff.
- From March 29, Tesco is giving hundreds of thousands of staff a pay rise, increasing base pay by 5.1% to 13.28, with a £1.27 London allowance raising rates to 14.55 within the M25.
- The rise coincides with government NLW and NMW updates and ensures Tesco's rates sit above the £13.28 minimum wage for over 21s.
- Usdaw's Daniel Adams welcomed the pay rise, saying it 'extends the gap between the Tesco rates of pay and the national living wage,' and praised Tesco's upcoming domestic abuse policy later this year including up to three days' paid leave.
- Younger staff will see targeted increases to their minimum rates, with workers aged 18–20 rising 85p to reach £12.71, and younger staff aged 16 and 17 seeing a 45p increase, while apprentices will also receive a 45p boost to £8.00.
- The sector-wide increases reshape pay competition among grocers as Sainsbury's announced a 5% pay rise, with Lidl lifting entry-level rates, and Aldi set to become the highest-paying supermarket from April.
