Tens of thousands march in Lisbon over housing and living costs
Protesters say housing costs and rents have surged faster than wages, as police cleared illegal tent camps and arrested 55 people.
Tens of thousands of people marched through central Lisbon on Saturday to protest soaring living costs and a deepening housing crisis, as the CGTP-led rally increased pressure on Portugal's centre-right government.
House prices and rents have more than doubled since 2017, fueling one of Europe's worst housing affordability crises, while inflation hit 3.6% in September driven by rising food and fuel prices.
PhD student Carolina Cruz faces losing her home as rent renewal could push costs above €1,200 monthly, while teacher Pedro Penilo said Portugal's leaders were "out of touch with reality."
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Carlos Abreu Amorim said on Friday the "government will not yield to shouts from the street," while stating concrete measures to address concerns are already being rolled out.
Rising unrest preceded Saturday's march, including a housing activist camp in Porto that police cleared in a pre-dawn operation on Monday, while similar protests against costs have emerged in France, Belgium, and Albania.
Demonstrators vow to continue their campaign to call for affordable housing in Portugal after police cleared tent camps and arrested at least 55 people.
