Following growing criticism by tennis professionals, ATP will introduce a mandatory heat protection rule from the 2026 season onwards. Thus, ATP will adapt to the requirements of the WTA in women's tennis, which have already been setting limit values for years.
On Tuesday, the ATP announced the introduction of the measure to protect players from extreme conditions, responding to the multiple criticisms that had sparked several tournaments this season.
To protect its players from the heat, ATP decided to introduce a new rule for the 2026 season, which the WTA circuit already uses.
From 2026 all the times that the Wgbt index (which evaluates the thermal stress of the body) will exceed 30.1 degrees, the athlete will be able to cheat a break, but only after playing the first two sets.
