Lokayukta Traps Dharwad Tahsildar; ₹50 Lakh Seized

- On Wednesday night, Karnataka Lokayukta officials arrested Dharwad tehsildar Sachidananda Kuchanur after trapping him while he accepted a Rs 50 lakh bribe from a landowner.
- A developer owning 33 acres at Yarikoppa sought approval to declare 13 acres unsuitable for farming, but Kuchanur allegedly demanded the bribe and one acre of land to execute the approval.
- After the complainant expressed safety concerns, Kuchanur instructed him to meet near Karnataka Arts College, where Lokayukta officers arrested the tehsildar at 9:30 pm while accepting the cash.
- Officials produced Kuchanur before a magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody; Lokayukta SP Siddalingappa said further investigation is underway including examination of his premises.
- Proximity to IIT Dharwad and the Karnataka High Court has driven land rates to approximately Rs 1.5 crore per acre, fueling development pressure in the region 12 km off Dharwad along the Pune-Bengaluru highway.
