Teenage e-bike rider jailed for over six years for killing great-grandmother at zebra crossing

Billy Stokoe was also disqualified from driving for more than eight years after the fatal collision, court officials said.

  • On Friday at Newcastle Crown Court, Billy Stokoe, 19, was sentenced to six years and nine months for causing death by dangerous driving after striking 86-year-old Gloria Stephenson on a Sunderland zebra crossing on May 16 last year.
  • Stokoe was riding an illegal, defective Sur-Ron e-bike while over the cannabis limit, holding his mobile phone in his left hand despite it being the only side with a functional brake.
  • Dashcam footage revealed Stokoe made no effort to slow down or avoid Stephenson before fleeing the scene to change clothes and hide the bike, leaving her to die at the crossing.
  • Victim's daughter Lisa Tench addressed Stokoe in court, condemning him for inflicting "horrific injuries" and fleeing, while family members criticized his lack of remorse regarding holiday plans booked before the killing.
  • Northumbria Police Superintendent Billy Mulligan urged the public to report dangerous e-bike riders, saying, "let us know so we can do something about it," insisting authorities will pursue the "menace" on roads.
