Teen charged with killing stepsister on Carnival Cruise faces trial in June
The defendant has pleaded not guilty, and prosecutors say the case was moved from juvenile to adult court because of the severity of the charges.
- U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom scheduled the trial for 16 year-year-old Timothy Hudson to begin June 1 in Miami, where he faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse of his 18-year-old stepsister, Anna Kepner.
- Anna Kepner died of mechanical asphyxia while traveling on the Carnival Horizon ship in November; her body was found concealed under a bed in the cabin she shared with Hudson and another teen.
- The 18-year-old victim was a high school cheerleader at Temple Christian School in Titusville, Florida, about 40 miles east of Orlando. Hudson entered a written plea of not guilty last week.
- Initially charged as a juvenile, Hudson's case was transferred to adult court; minors are rarely prosecuted in federal court. Jury selection and proceedings begin June 1 at the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Courthouse.
- Anna Kepner's father, Christopher Kepner, said the family is placing "trust in the justice system to pursue the truth with care and integrity." At her November memorial service, family members wore bright colors "in honor of Anna.
