Teen charged with killing stepsister on Carnival Cruise could be jailed until trial
Prosecutors want Timothy Hudson held in custody after he was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse in his stepsister’s death.
A federal judge will decide Wednesday morning in Miami whether Timothy Hudson, a teenager charged with sexually assaulting and killing his 18-year-old stepsister on a Carnival Cruise ship, remains free pending trial.
Anna Kepner's body was found concealed under a bed during a November cruise after she and Hudson shared a cabin; medical examiners determined she died from mechanical asphyxia on Nov. 6.
Kepner was a high school cheerleader at Temple Christian School in Titusville, Florida, about 40 miles east of Orlando, whose family honored her memory at a November service with bright colors reflecting her bright and beautiful soul.
After Hudson's case transferred to adult court, prosecutors requested he be held in custody, reversing Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres's February ruling that allowed him to live with an uncle under electronic monitoring.
Hudson has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse charges; his federal public defenders have declined comment while the family characterized the situation as deeply painful and complex.
