Former Belgian gynecology student R.V. (25), who raped a female student in Leuven, has also been found guilty on appeal. However, the Brussels Court of Appeal again ruled against him. In considering the appeal, the court took into account his "profound sense of guilt." The case caused a considerable uproar during the previous trial.
The verdict was met with a lot of criticism: a student rapes a woman, but the sentence is suspended. Now the Court of Appeal in Brussels has confirmed the decision: he "behaved with consideration".
The case caused a wave of anger in Belgium. Yet, the court reached the same conclusion as the lower court.
The medical student was also found guilty on appeal of the sexual assault and rape of a fellow student, but he will not receive any punishment. "It is and remains rape," emphasizes press judge Annelien Verschaeve. "A suspension does not equate to impunity."
