Rays Moving Left-Hander Steven Matz to the Bullpen After 2 Rough Starts
Steven Matz will pitch out of the bullpen after allowing 11 runs in his last two starts, Rays manager Kevin Cash said.
On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Rays moved left-hander Steven Matz to the bullpen following two poor starts. Manager Kevin Cash announced the decision as Matz's ERA climbed to 5.48 this season.
Matz allowed 11 runs and 13 hits over his last two outings, with his fastball velocity dipping to 92 mph from his 93.3 mph average. Cash pulled him early during Tuesday's 8-0 loss to Detroit.
The 35-year-old recently returned from the injured list on May 20 after recovering from left elbow inflammation. Previously with the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox, he struck out 59 across 76 2/3 innings last season.
Ahead of Saturday's game in Miami, Cash said the move is "not by any stretch permanent" and right-hander Mason Englert could provide bulk innings as a replacement. The manager added they will reassess Matz's role later.
While the Rays lead the American League East by 1 game entering Saturday, the organization intends to reassess Matz's bullpen role in the foreseeable future. His acceptance of the move signals flexibility as the team pursues continued success.
