Taiwan sees only warships and warplanes as China talks peace with opposition
Taipei says nearly 100 Chinese vessels and seven aircraft were detected as Beijing tells Taiwan’s opposition it seeks peace.
- On Friday, Chinese naval deployments reached nearly 100 vessels in the South and East China Seas as Beijing hosted Kuomintang chairwoman Cheng Li-wun. While Xi Jinping promoted peace, the surge intensified military pressure around Taiwan, according to Taiwanese security officials.
- Taiwan Defence Minister Wellington Koo warned Thursday that "China is continuously and persistently expanding its military capabilities," a threat intensified by the opposition KMT skipping talks on stalled defence spending. The KMT claims there is "no connection whatsoever" between Cheng's trip and government defence plans.
- China declared "reserved" airspace until May 5, previously used for military drills, while security sources debate whether the surge represents a "new normal" or is "very rare." Beijing provided no explanation for the ongoing maneuvers, though the increase rose from nearly 70 vessels at month's end to nearly 100 this week.
- National Security Bureau head Tsai Ming-yen said Wednesday that China intends to test U.S. air activity in the Indo-Pacific. "This may also be politically intended to demonstrate the state of U.S. air activity in the Indo-Pacific region prior to the Trump-Xi meeting," he added.
- These developments occur as President Donald Trump prepares for a May meeting with Xi Jinping. Analysts suggest the timing aims to shape regional dynamics and test U.S. responses before the leaders discuss high-stakes bilateral issues.
