Taiwan says China using militia boats to expand 'battlefield preparation' in western Pacific
Taiwan said the coordinated vessels are part of grey-zone operations that could help Beijing rehearse a maritime blockade, officials said.
On Friday, October 23, Taiwan's Coast Guard reported that China is coordinating militia vessels with coast guard ships to expand "battlefield preparation" around Taiwan and into the western Pacific, warning operations also pressure Japan and the Philippines.
The Coast Guard characterized coordinated activity as part of broader "grey-zone" operations using law-enforcement and civilian cover to expand Beijing's maritime influence while remaining below open conflict, which officials believe practices for a possible maritime blockade.
Officials placed the suspected militia fishing boat Minfudingyu 07902 on a priority watchlist after it came within about 2.7 nautical miles of Taiwan's restricted waters on August 16, displaying "characteristics" of militia activity.
Taiwan's Coast Guard warned complex operations increase surveillance burden on Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines, creating regional security pressure that could "affect the existing international maritime order."
China has repeatedly stated its operations are "legitimate and lawful" because they occur in Chinese waters, a position Taipei's government strongly rejects, maintaining only the island's people can decide its future.
