Taiwan on alert after spotting two Chinese warships near its Penghu islands

Late Monday, Taiwan's defence ministry reported two Chinese warships, a destroyer and a frigate, entered waters southwest of the Penghu islands in the Taiwan Strait.
China, which views Taiwan as its own territory, conducts near-daily military incursions around the island, claiming activities are "entirely justified and reasonable" while Taipei rejects Beijing's sovereignty assertions.
In its daily update on Tuesday morning, Taiwan's defence ministry reported nine Chinese warships and 22 military aircraft operating around the island over the past 24 hours.
Taiwan's military "closely monitored the formation and responded appropriately using naval and air forces," the ministry added, releasing aerial photographs of both ships without disclosing exact locations.
The Penghu islands host major Taiwanese navy and air bases near the Taiwan side of the Taiwan Strait, making the location a strategic focal point amid persistent tensions between Beijing and Taipei.
