Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an remembers 228 Incident, seeks to transcend tragedy
Taipei, Feb. 28 (CNA) Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安), a purported descendant of late Republic of China President Chiang Kai-shek (蔣中正), said Saturday that rather than shunning the 228 Incident, he will spare no effort to address history "as a Taiwanese" in a bid to transcend it.
A memorial service for the 79th anniversary of the 228 Incident was held today at the 228 Peace Park in Taipei. Pro-independence groups and some victims' families gathered outside the park to protest against the Chiang Wan-an City Government's restriction on the right to assemble and march, and demanded that the government apologize for its historical mistakes. 125 police officers were deployed to the scene for security.
