- On Tuesday, August 4, 2026, a study from Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan, published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, reported that long-term tadalafil use is linked to increased glaucoma risk in men.
- Researchers analyzed data from 73,854 men in the TriNetX Analytics Network, comparing 36,927 patients prescribed tadalafil for lower urinary tract symptoms against an equal number of non-users over 5 years.
- Tadalafil users were 22 per cent more likely to develop glaucoma, 32 per cent more likely to have ocular hypertension, and 33 per cent more likely to start glaucoma treatment than non-users.
- Study authors Chien-Chih Chou and colleagues recommended baseline ophthalmic assessments and regular follow-ups for patients on long-term therapy, particularly those with pre-existing glaucoma risk factors.
- Experts including researcher Freedland cautioned the study was observational and could not prove causation, noting confounding factors like hypertension severity might influence results.
