Lebanon Opens Investigation Into Syrian Militia Leader’s Abduction and Transfer to Syria
Syrian authorities say the arrest follows a joint intelligence operation and comes less than two weeks after the detention of his deputy, Jamal Traboulsi.
- On Thursday, Syrian authorities announced the arrest in Lebanon of paramilitary leader Mihrac Ural, also known as Ali Kayali, who is accused of orchestrating massacres during the civil war.
- Ural led the "Syrian Resistance," a paramilitary group that backed late leader Bashar al-Assad, and is suspected of planning the 2013 Reyhanli car bombings that killed 53 people.
- The arrest occurred less than two weeks after Jamal Traboulsi, identified as Ural's deputy, was captured, and resulted from a "joint operation" between Syrian intelligence and the Turkish National Intelligence Organization.
- Interior Minister Anas Khattab said on X, "The criminal Mihrac Ural is now where he should be," while Ahmad Zeydan, a media adviser to President Ahmad al-Sharaa, warned, "Every murderous criminal will be hunted down."
- Amid conflicting accounts, a security source told al-Modon that Ural was arrested in the Bekaa to "coordinate his activities," as Syria's new Islamist authorities continue arresting former Assad security officials.
