Sydney veteran calls time on decorated career: ‘Nothing left’
The veteran defender ends a 14-season career as one of Sydney’s most decorated players, with 289 games and four grand final defeats.
On Friday, Sydney Swans champion Dane Rampe announced his retirement from the AFL after 289 games, ending a 14-season career. The 36-year-old defender decided against playing on following the team's shattering finals exit.
Drafted as a mature-age rookie in 2012, Rampe evolved into one of the club's most decorated players over 14 seasons. He earned All-Australian honours in 2016 and won the Bob Skilton Medallist award in 2019, co-captaining from 2019 to 2023.
The Pullman Hotel saga saw five teammates suspended for a "serious breach of expected club behaviour," which Rampe admitted "muddied those waters." He felt "upset and hurt" by the late-season turmoil that complicated his retirement decision.
Conversations with coach Dean Cox provided the clarity Rampe needed to retire, after Cox "delicately" suggested he could no longer give the "100 per cent that made me Dane Rampe." The exchange resolved his internal conflict.
With Rampe's departure, the club faces a significant defensive rebuild amid a growing exodus. Skipper Callum Mills is expected to miss the entire 2027 season with an ACL injury, forcing coach Dean Cox to restructure the back half.
