Sydney, N.S., selected as the preferred maintenance port for new Arctic icebreakers
Sydney was chosen for its deep-water port, Arctic proximity, and partnership with Membertou; the facility will service two new icebreakers arriving in the early 2030s.
- On Jan. 13, 2026, the federal government announced Sydney, N.S., as the preferred maintenance base for Coast Guard vessels, with Mike Kelloway making the announcement for Defence Minister David McGuinty at the Canadian Coast Guard Academy.
- Ottawa cited Sydney harbour's deep water, proximity to the Canadian Coast Guard Academy, and one of the shortest Arctic routes from Eastern Canada, near Halifax, Nova Scotia.
- Coast Guard assistant commissioner Gary Ivany said geotechnical surveys will be needed to support docks and maintenance buildings for two 120-metre ships, with the facility expected to be built by the early 2030s.
- On band-owned Sydport land, officials said the facility will be built on Membertou First Nation land while talks continue over lease or sale, and local leaders say it will boost Cape Breton's economy and honor Sydney harbour's wartime role.
- Officials said due diligence, planning and consultations with Indigenous groups and local landowners must take place before the project moves ahead.
