Travellers Warned of Disruptions as Sydney Airport Workers Strike
The Transport Workers Union says the eight-hour action follows failed bargaining talks and seeks more full-time jobs, fairer rostering and better pay.
Hundreds of Certis security workers at Sydney Airport will strike on Friday across domestic and international terminals, with the Transport Workers Union scheduling walk-offs from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Failed "crisis bargaining talks" on Thursday between Certis and the union led to the action, with the TWU claiming the airport has been "squeezing workers" while reporting a profit of $584.3 million.
TWU NSW State Secretary Richard Olsen stated aviation jobs used to be secure but airports have "decimated these standards" over the last 15 years, while workers demand more full-time roles and fairer rostering.
Sydney Airport advised travellers to allow extra time, as Qantas warned of potential disruptions; Certis expressed it remains "disappointed" that employees rejected its latest offer.
Transport Workers Union national secretary Michael Kaine stated the strike is about the "security and safety of all passengers flying in our airways," asserting the blame "lies squarely at the feet of Sydney Airport.
