Swiss Breakout Star Manzambi and 2 Others Leave Training Ahead of World Cup Clash with Colombia
Switzerland said Manzambi, Rubén Vargas and Djibril Sow cut training short, leaving their status uncertain before the round of 16 match.
On Monday, Switzerland's breakout World Cup star Johan Manzambi left training early ahead of Tuesday's round of 16 match against Colombia in Vancouver.
The 20-year-old midfielder has scored three goals during the tournament, displaying versatility that stymies opponents while playing for Freiburg in the Bundesliga with 26 starts.
Beyond Manzambi, Ruben Vargas and Djibril Sow also cut training short, while Defender Luca Jaquez and Michel Aebisischer did not participate in the session.
Coach Murat Yakin said, "If they might not play tomorrow, it could be a huge issue for us," noting players face medical examinations to determine availability.
Should the Swiss win on Tuesday, they will reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1954; Yakin remains optimistic despite absences.
