Swimmer killed in shark attack at popular Western Australia beach

Police said search crews found no trace of the swimmer as beaches in Joondalup were closed and investigators reviewed reports of a 5-meter shark.

  • On Friday morning, a swimmer went missing after a suspected shark attack about 50 meters off Sorrento Beach near Raleigh Road in Perth's northern suburbs around 10.15am.
  • This incident follows a shark attack on Monday at Glenfield Beach in Geraldton, 420km north of Perth, where 56-year-old surfer Mel Ismail was mauled by a shark.
  • Witnesses reported a shark up to six meters long, while Police helicopters and water police are currently searching the area as another swimmer who was with the man had to be consoled by rescuers.
  • Authorities have closed Sorrento Beach to the public while three St John WA crews remain on scene under priority one conditions, with the shark siren sounding repeatedly since the attack.
  • The suspected attack comes one week after Surf Life Saving WA helicopter patrols began their summer season operations, as crowds gathered on the path above the beach to observe the search.
