The Gotland P18 Regiment was formed in 2018, but preparations have been ongoing since 2016 as a consequence of the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014. After a full-scale Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022, military build-up on the island was accelerated. A combat unit equivalent to a reduced brigade is being formed, including armor, air defense, infantry, artillery and medical care. Territorial defense is also active on Gotland.
