Sweden can help fund Ukraine's Gripen deal, defence minister says

Sweden and 16 European countries explore diverse financing including military aid and frozen Russian assets for Ukraine's potential purchase of up to 150 Gripen E jets.

  • On Thursday in Stockholm, Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson said Sweden and Ukraine are progressing financing talks for up to 150 Gripen E jets and that `It is moving forward and we're working closely with the Ukrainian side` while hosting Denys Shmyhal.
  • The October agreement established long-term air-defence cooperation between Sweden and Ukraine that includes the potential export of Gripen E fighter jets, analysts view the Gripen as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive aircraft.
  • Saab says it can scale production and is exploring international cooperation, as Gripen E uses General Electric engines and many components from British manufacturers.
  • Earliest deliveries could take place in approximately three years, and if finalised the deal would be Sweden's largest-ever aircraft export, while Saab's recent four-jet sale to Thailand valued at 5.3 billion Swedish crowns raises questions about Ukraine's ability to finance the purchase.
  • The plan relies on export credits, frozen Russian assets , and 40 billion Swedish crowns next year and 40 billion in 2027, with Jonson presenting it to the Coalition of the Willing.
