Pop Royal Frenzy Forces Shutdown of Swatch Store at The Mall of Millenia
The $400 to $420 watches drew hundreds of shoppers, prompting police calls, citations and temporary store closures over safety concerns.
Swatch and luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet launched the Royal Pop Collection on Saturday, marrying "Audemars Piguet's iconic Royal Oak and Swatch's POP watches from the 1980s."
Anticipation for the collaboration, announced earlier last week, drew long queues, with shoppers waiting since Tuesday for a chance to purchase watches following successful partnerships like the Bioceramic MoonSwatch and Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms.
Massive crowds prompted police to intervene at locations including King of Prussia Mall and Somerset Mall, leading Swatch to close over a dozen stores nationwide, including 17 locations, citing public safety considerations.
While some fans expressed disappointment that the collection featured pocket watches, Swatch confirmed the products are available at 21 U.S. boutiques and will remain on sale for several months.
The collection provides a lower-cost entry point for enthusiasts unable to afford Audemars Piguet's signature Royal Oak models, which typically sell for $30,000 to well over $1 million.
