Suspicious Mail Sent to Wisconsin Elections Commission Deemed Non-Hazardous
Field testing found no hazardous material, and no injuries were reported as the FBI and other agencies investigate similar mail sent to election offices.
On Wednesday, the Wisconsin Elections Commission received a suspicious piece of mail containing an unidentified powdery substance that field testing later determined was non-hazardous.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating a series of suspicious mailings sent to election and congressional offices nationwide, some containing unknown substances.
A WEC staff member identified the incoming mail shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday, recognized it matched suspicious packages reported in other states, and immediately alerted authorities without opening it.
WEC Administrator Meagan Wolfe stated, "Let this be very clear: this incident will not shake us," emphasizing the event will not impact the November 3 general election.
These threats emerge three weeks before Election Day, recalling a 2023 incident when election offices in six states received mailings containing white powder.
